The Colorado Pain Initiative has been in existence since 1990 and was granted 501c 3 status in 1991. We hold regular meetings and have benefited with our association with COPIC, the leading malpractice insurer of Colorado physicians. We have a number of diverse members representing acute, chronic, and cancer pain interests. Our board members include physicians, advanced practice nurses, attorneys, drug company representatives, and organizational affiliates. We provide education for physicians, nurses, & pharmacists about appropriate pain treatment. We have a one-hour program about the basics of pain management. We also offer ½ or full day conferences titled “Making Pain Primary” geared to primary care physicians in Colorado. We have close associations with the Colorado Medical Board, the Colorado Medical Society, the American Society for Pain Management Nursing, the Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force, the Colorado Nurses Association, the Oncology Nursing Society and the Colorado Board of Pharmacy. COPIC provides meeting space and some secretarial services. We do not have paid staff. All board members are volunteers.
